When you are thinking about dentists do you get cold sweats or do you just say -oh, it’s that time of year again?- If you get nervous you might need to take the time to figure out what is bothering you so that you can get the most out of your visit.
When it comes time to get your teeth cleaned is it a chore or are you one of the first to make an appointment. If you drag your feet and set yourself dozens of reminders only to dismiss all of them saying to yourself you’ll do it later is it because you hate going or because you don’t like your doctor? Having the right dentist can make things go a lot smoother when it comes time to get those teeth cleaned and your mouth checked out.
How do you know you have the right dentist for you? Well for starters does just thinking about visiting his office give you chills or do you have a neutral feeling about it. No one is going to be excited about seeing him but you shouldn’t dread making the dentists appointment. The right doctor for you will make you feel comfortable during your appointment. You might want one that is available to talk to you and explain in detail everything that is going to happen. Or you might be more comfortable with one that will answer your questions if you have any but otherwise will do his job and nothing more, no idle chit-chat, no going into great detail unless you ask. It all really depends on the type of person you are and the type of doctor you want to see.
If you like how your dentist treats you but just can’t stand the thought of going to the chair then you might want to consider looking into why that is. Did you have a bad experience at an office once? Are you afraid of pain? Does the tech hurt you while cleaning? Some of these things can be taken care of by your current doctor. If you are afraid of pain speak to him before the cleaning starts. Tell him the truth that you like his manner but going terrifies you because of the pain. Believe it or not many dentists have started using sedation to help ease the fear and anxiety. You might be surprised to find that your doctor has this as an option. The same applies with rough assistants. She may not realize she’s being too rough, just let her know.
Going to the dentists office shouldn’t be a terror inducing experience. With a little research to make sure you have the right one for you and a little conversation you might be able to change the experience to one that is more enjoyable. Not that you’ll be beating the door down to make a six month appointment but maybe you can make them more regularly to better care for your mouth.
